‘Why do today what you can put off til tomorrow’ – any moral dilemmas over paint have been postponed. The hazardous waste day at the tip can wait until the next one. All because magnolia, of course, contains the primary colour, yellow. Not for nothing did I teach the colour wheel to Year 3s. With that knowledge, a bit of Barbados Blue paint (someone presumably gets paid to think up these names) and a green tester pot, I mixed and stirred, like a witch over her cauldron.

I have previous form for doing this but actually made a bit of a hash of it. This time I needed to make enough as it is totally impossible to recreate the exact colour that you make yourself -well, that’s my experience anyway and I am fed up with wool being a different batch and having to ‘frog’ it. You mean to say that you don’t understand what I am on about? ‘Frogging’ in crochet is when you have to ‘rip it, rip it’ when you discover that you have taken a ball of wool an ever so slightly different shade than the rest with you on holiday and had to rip out all that you had achieved when you get home. Either that or when you lose at ‘yarn chicken’ – but I digress.

I am currently agonising over whether the paint is too ‘minty’. I am not sure why that is a problem, but it is. The green tester pot went a very long way but would adding more Barbados Blue upset the mix altogether. Too late, it is now on the wall of the alcove and I consider anything lighter than the dark brown, on most of the walls, is an improvement.

Each wall needs to be scrubbed first to remove the nicotine, then the white paint, which is what the dining room will be, is taking 3 coats. My homemade greeny duck egg blue (no one is going to employ me as a paint namer) is only taking two. Progress, shall we say, is ‘steady’
